Cairo Center for Development and Law Announces the Results of Salama and Aman Competition to Combat Violence against Women

In a ceremony held by Cairo Center for Development and Law, on the occasion of the International Women's Day, awards of Salama and Aman Competition were distributed. The Cairo Center for Development launched the fourth round of "Salama and Aman" competition for male and female young media personnel in audio, visual, electronic and printed media means. The competition aims at raising awareness and defending issues of violence survivors to choose the best reportage, program, news…etc. as media means is one of the most important tools of combating violence against women.

The arbitration committee formed of Mrs. BaheegaHussien, a journalist in Al Ahali newspaper, Ahmed Esmat, a media person and manager of Alexandria Media Forum and Mrs. Mai Amer, a researcher in doctorate research about "social role realized by teenagers from the current popular songs". The committee met in the center's office to choose the winner tasks in different media means.  The center sees that the committee should be headed by a pioneer media person and to have two members of qualified youth.

In its final meeting, the committee chose the following tasks:

The first award: topic of story uncover the untold file "harassment and rape of incest"- victims tell their stories by the young women journalist FadiaAbood – AlHakaya website.

The committee saw that the topic professionally presented in a journalistic way. The topic also reflected the exerted effort in research and information verification to result in complete file from three parts. The file presents information that explains and highlights the side effects suffered by women survivors of harassment and rape of incest, in addition to usage of infograph, data analysis and charts in an interesting way.

The second award: the investigative reportage "Domestic Violence: A Danger tears the Egyptian Family" by the female journalists Alya Abo Shahba and NohaAbdeen in Rose El Yousif newspaper.

Throughout the reportage the journalists present a deep analysis to the domestic violence phenomenon by an ample presentation of stories of women survivors of violence, in addition to narrations of officials in support centers based on statistics of women exposed to violence. The journalists also highlight the inadequacy of law as it does not state the marital rape. They present an obvious vision of the state and law role in getting rid of the phenomenon through all national and strategic axes in combating violence against women adopted by the National Council for Women.

The third award: the committee decided that the third award will be equally for the article "Be Aware: Mrs. Soso is Divorced" by the female journalist ManarHazem and the short movie "Stickers" which is co-produced by the Arab Organization for Electronic Media and Al Tahrir Forum/Al Nile Delta.

In a subjective experience, the journalist presents the symbolic violence suffered by the divorced. This is through information collection from the divorced  regarding the society's view towards them as "impolite", despite what they suffer as a result of  the divorce and the loads their bear in upbringing their children within unjust personal status law.

As for the movie, in three minutes, it presents the idea of stereotyping and discrimination to which different categories of women are exposed. Cairo Center for Development considers movies as one of the most important, popular and accepted media means. The movie also was nominated as it is produced by self-efforts in training workshop in Al Gharbia governorates away from centralization following the center's values in breaking the cultural centralization.

It is worth mentioning that there were many good tasks that were sent within the competition regarding the news and the vision, but they used children and women photos in some issues and did not follow the privacy rules; the matter which is considered a violation to women and children's rights and to the international and vocational charters. In addition, we have noted that the sent tasks that tackled different issues of violence against women need linguistic and feminist auditing especially as feminist concepts were approved many years ago. We have noted also that some tasks present women and some religions negatively. So the center calls all media personnel to commit to the required vocational criteria.
