The Feminist Organizations Coalition calls the presidential team to put women's issues on its agenda to achieve the citizenship principle

Thursday, 30 August 2012 12:58

The Feminist Organizations Coalition states its severe shock concerning the low representation of woman in the presidential team which is limited to three women: Dr. Bachnam El Sharqawi, political science professor, Mrs. Sikina Fouad, journalist and Dr. Omaima Kamel, member of the constituent assembly of Egypt.

This limited representation of women in the presidential team does not match the ambitions and women organizations in increasing women representation in leadership positions in the state. In addition, the president does not fulfill his promise of appointing a woman as a vice president. The presidential team proves that women are not on the president's agenda. Besides, the majority of the selected women belong to the political Islam trend, the matter which is different than before as it is used to appoint women from various political trends.

In this context, Egyptian Feminist Organizations Coalition declares its strong astonishment of Dr. Bachnam El Sharqawi's declarations, who is appointed in the position of president assistant, saying that there are no feminist organizations in Egypt comparing to Tunisia and that women's conditions in Egypt have been improved. When these declarations come true, this means that she is not familiar with women's issues. Women's sufferance and marginalization are proven by figures and statistics in national, regional and international reports, in addition to academic studies of universities, Egyptian research centers and field researches of CSOs (feminist, developmental and human rights CSOs) that provide realistic image about discrimination that Egyptian woman face in different fields (education – labor – health – social insurance – violence – family status…etc.), the matter which means that these false image of women will be transmitted to the president and his team.

We praise the appointment of Mrs. Sikina Fouad, in the position of the president's consultant because her orientations advocate women's rights, also she is aware of CSOs' conditions and women's issues.

The Egyptian feminist organization coalition calls the president's consultants to adopt mechanisms and policies based on citizenship principle to adopt Egyptian woman issues and solve her problems. The coalition also calls the president to increase women numbers upon the final formulation of the presidential council and putting woman's issues on its agenda.
